The following are sample criteria that can be included in a rating system.
Note: this prototype is for informational and educational purposes only. It demonstrates what quality criteria might be used in an actual news quality rating system and how that translates into a quality rating score. The actual news quality standard is still in development and will be published on this and other websites further into the development cycle.
                         
The newsroom editor should rate the news in the newsroom, prior to broadcasting it.

1. Facts: is content supported by established facts (science, law,...)?
2. Bias: does news segment favor a specific viewpoint?
3. Context Preservation: degree to which the information presented in a news segment maintains original meaning
4. Fairness: degree to which opposing views are treated with respect
5. Balance: does the news segment reflect differing viewpoints equally?
6. Ethical: is news producer acting in a professional manner in the production of the content?
7. Deception: does the producer or sources provide misleading information?
8. Motive: does the news content derive from an agenda, advocacy, etc?
9. Embellishment: does the producer or sources provide commentary, opinion, spin, analysis?
10. Disclosure of Unknowns: does the producer integrate knowledge of missing information into the content narrative?
11. Assumptions: does the producer compensate for known missing information?
12. Conflict of Interest: does the producer have a personal stake or bias relative to the story that cannot be set aside?
13. Source Quantity: does the producer consult more than 2 sources?
14. Source Veracity: ostensible or documented credibility of source
15. Source Independence: degree of source corroboration
16. Source Anonymity: whether sources can be cited in the report
17. Controversial: degree to which public debates or disagrees with the subject/issues
18. Relevancy: degree to which content reflects the public interest
19. Importance: degree of newsworthiness
20. Diverse Viewpoints: degree to which the content reflects diverse viewpoints
21. Key Detail Omission: degree to which pertinent information is omitted, altering the meaning of the story
